Industry training is work-based training. It focuses on the skill needs of industry, helps people develop their careers, and assists employers improve productivity in their business.
ESITO’s
qualifications and standards have been developed with industry participation. The qualifications are reviewed regularly to ensure the content remains relevant.
Most of your training will take place “on-job”, that is in the workplace. Some qualifications include “off-job” training that will be completed away from the workplace. “Off job” training is only available from an approved training provider.
Duration
The time taken to complete a
qualification varies depending on the type of qualification, the trainee’s abilities and the support provided by an employer.
The more complex qualifications take up to three years to complete. However,
assessment is based on competency rather than the length of time taken to complete a qualification. How long it actually takes to finish the qualification depends on the efforts of both the trainee and the employer.

The
qualifications are open to people of any age. Each qualification has prerequisites which you have to meet before you can start.

Trainee Licence Requirement
Electricity Amendment Act 2006 and the new Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010
For new trainee licence requirement, refer to the
Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB) website.
With the new regulations coming into force on 1 April 2010, there is a requirement for some future and current trainees to hold a limited licence issued by the Electrical Workers Registration Board.
The licence application is to be completed by the trainee and signed by a person qualifying as a ‘supervisor’ under the above Act and Regulations.
- Supervision is now designated as Prescribed Electrical Work (PEW).
- The licence is required before a trainee is involved in any PEW.

Q. Regarding supervision procedures for trainees. Is there a minimum “post-registration” time frame for a licensed person to be entitled to supervise in any class of registration?
A. No.
Q. Who must sign the “signature of supervisor” box on the Trainee Limited Certificate Application form?
A. The supervisor’s signature does not have to be the person who provides the direct supervision. A person who is a representative of the company or organisation, is registered, and has a current practicing licence is required to sign the form.
Q. The checklist on the Trainee Limited Certificate Application form asks for verification of membership of a trainee organisation and details of traineeship. What evidence would satisfy this requirement?
A. A copy of an ESITO training agreement.
Q. When do current trainees have to apply for a limited licence?
A. Current trainees are required to register as from 1 April 2010. The EWRB has not and does not intend to specify a required by date.
Q. Does a trainee need a trainee licence if operating under an employer licence?
A. No.
