It’s possible to get a job in the electricity supply industry direct from school.  Consider contacting local electricity supply industry companies directly.  Ask them to register your interest in any upcoming vacancies.

Or check the links on the vacancies pages of our current member companies.  Remember also to keep an eye on the situations vacant pages in newspapers and on internet job sites.

Typically, the types of positions open to school leavers include:

• Office juniors and administration
• Call centre operators
• Civil workers - labouring, digging trenches etc
• Apprentices – electricians, telecommunication technicians, operators, line mechanics, cable jointers, electrical fitters, mechanical fitters

Requirements for these positions vary, but most employers will prefer you to have completed year 12.

Doing one of the free ESITO Taster Courses held around the country could help too. The taster course will give you an overview of the industry. You will get a chance to complete some relevant electrical, health and safety, and communication credits from the National Qualifications Framework.

Another way to get into the industry direct from school is to complete the ESITO Gateway Programme with a work placement at a local company. You can also improve your chances of a permanent job by getting a part-time job or work experience at the local company you’re interested in. You’ll need to contact companies directly to see if they have any opportunities to work with them. 

Employers often want to see evidence of your school and any work history, so always have an up-to-date copy of your CV (curriculum vitae or resume) ready to send to them and to take to any meetings or interviews.
